Underground Electric
Facilities – Junction Box
Junction
Boxes are metal cases used to house and protect connection
points of underground high voltage wires. They are roughly
six feet long and about three feet tall, though some are
larger and some are smaller. Inside the junction box one
will find many high voltage wires that come up from beneath
the box. These are the high voltage wires that provide
the electricity to homes and businesses in the area. The
wires are terminated (secured at the end point) and connected
to another set of wires via bus work. The wires then go
back underground typically to a depth of about four feet.
An open junction box is extremely dangerous. Do not stand
or play on a junction box. Never approach one if the cover
or lid is open. If it appears to be open, call BGMU dispatch
immediately at 782-1200 and inform them of the open junction
box’s location.
Underground Electric Facilities – Transformer
Residential
areas that are served by underground facilities will have
transformers located on the corners of almost every yard.
Transformers are metal boxes, usually green in color.
They are typically found in the front yard, about ten
feet from the curb of the street. Generally, they are
on or near the property line. Transformers are used to
convert the high voltage electricity running underground
to the 120/240-volt electricity used by most homes. Do
not stand or play on a transformer. Never approach a transformer
if the cover or lid is open. If it appears to be open,
call BGMU dispatch immediately at 782-1200 and inform
them of the transformer’s location.
Underground Electric Facilities – Secondary Pedestal
Secondary
pedestals are smaller, hard plastic cases that measure
roughly two feet wide by one and a half feet tall. They
are often found near an underground transformer. These
pedestals serve as connection points for the secondary
wires that provide electricity directly to your home.
Do not stand or play on a pedestal. Never approach a pedestal
if the cover or lid is open. If it appears to be open,
call BGMU dispatch immediately at 782-1200 and inform
them of the pedestal’s location.
| Electric Facilities – Electric Meter
Electric
meters are generally located on houses and buildings,
but can sometimes also be found on utitly poles. The electric
meter calculates the amount of electricity that passes
through it and the customer is then charged for that amount.
Electric Facilities – Electric Substation
Substations
main functions are to receive energy transmitted at high
voltage from the generating stations, reduce the voltage
to a value appropriate for local use, and to provide facilities
for switching. BGMU’s typical substation receives
a feed of 69,000 volts and steps that down to 12,470 volts.
Due to the high amount of electricity coming in and out
of a substation, they are always protected with some sort
of security or fence around the perimeter. Gates to substations
should never be left open. If a gate or fence appears
to be open, call BGMU dispatch immediately at 782-1200
and inform them of the substation’s location.
